VACCINATIONS

Regular Vaccinations Are Important to a Pet’s Health and Happiness

Prevention is one of a veterinarian’s primary goals. Preventing disease, illness and ill-health is the purpose of every routine check-up and vaccination your pet experiences. Prevention is an integral part of an animal’s health and wellness, and it is much easier and less expensive to provide preventative treatment an animal rather than try to diagnose, treat and cure them once they have become ill. That is why veterinary hospitals recommend routine vaccinations for your pets.

Point Loma Veterinary Hospitals Recommend a Regular Rabies Vaccination and Other Immunizations

Domestic pets are very susceptible to a variety of infectious diseases, which is why you should begin their immunizations when they are still young. Our veterinarians, Dr. Rozsa and Dr. Deo, suggest beginning vaccinations at about 9 weeks of age. Our veterinarian will give you a vaccination schedule to follow for the pet until it is about 12 to 16 months of age. Bringing your pet to our animal vet clinic for vaccinations is much easier than late-night rushes to the emergency clinic because the pet has become sick with a disease that could have been prevented with proper immunization.

When animals are weaned from their mother’s milk they are no longer protected by her immunizations. That is why it is important to begin vaccinating your pets early so that they can build up their own immunities. When you give an animal a rabies shot or any other vaccination, you are giving them a tiny dose of either a killed or weakened form of the disease you want to protect against. As this antigen arrives in the animal’s body it begins to fight it off and in the process learns how to protect against it thus resulting in immunity to the disease. Despite vaccinations, some animals can still contract the disease, though this is seldom seen by veterinarians.

Rarely do we see a pet contract rabies in Point Loma or San Diego. For dogs it is California state law to have a current rabies vaccination. We encourage discussing with our veterinarians your pet’s lifestyle to find the best immunizations at our animal vet clinic. Dr. Rozsa can tell you how often you should give a rabies vaccination to your pet and what other diseases you should protect them against. Modern veterinary science has proven that vaccinations do not need to be annual as many of them protect for longer than a year. Nonetheless, our vet can guide you on when to vaccinate for diseases, such as bordetella, feline leukemia, parvovirus, rabies, distemper, Lymes disease and some dental diseases.

Regardless if your pet is an indoor or outdoor pet in Point Loma or San Diego, regular vaccinations are integral in keeping them safe and healthy. Keeping your Distemper, Rabies, Bordetella and Leukemia vaccines current is the smart thing to do to keep your beloved pet healthy and happy.

At Bayside Veterinary Hospital, serving San Diego and Point Loma, we would be pleased to discuss a vaccination schedule with you to help protect your pet. Remember that prevention is integral to an animal’s health and happiness, and remember that vaccinations mean prevention. Call us at (619) 610-0123 today.
