SURGERY

Point Loma Pet Surgery

The Point Loma veterinarians at our animal vet clinic are proud to offer routine and advanced pet surgical procedures. These procedures include spay/neuter operations, orthopedic surgery, and emergency surgery. Pet owners choose our animal vet clinic because of our experienced veterinarian, state-of-the-art surgical suites, strict safety guidelines and advanced pain management. The safety and well-being of your pet is our primary concern at all times.

Dog and Cat Surgery from Your Point Loma Veterinarians

Prior to any operation, our Point Loma veterinarians will discuss the procedure in detail with you including expected outcomes and potential complications. Not every pet is a good candidate for every operation. For example, recovery time following an orthopedic procedure can be several months; consequently, this procedure is not always a good fit for older pets. Advanced diagnostic equipment, including digital radiography and ultrasound, allows precise diagnosis of underlying health problems prior to surgery. Our goal is to balance the safety of your pet with the operation’s expected benefits.

We work closely with pet owners to help prepare pets for surgery and minimize the risk for potential complications. Prior to an operation, we conduct diagnostic blood work. This blood work helps our veterinarians detect a potential health problem that could make the use of anesthesia unsafe. For most operations, we will use anesthesia to minimize discomfort and immobilize your pet. When preparing your pet for surgery, an empty stomach reduces the risk for potentially life-threatening problems should your pet suffer a reaction to anesthesia.

Following an operation, our veterinary care team will monitor your pet during the recovery process. We will keep your pet at our animal vet clinic until the anesthesia wears off. When your pet is released, our veterinarian will send your pet home with detailed instructions for post-operative care. This includes any dietary and activity restrictions, as well pain management medication dosage and administration.

Depending on the type of surgery, recovery may take only a few days or be as long as several months. If you should have any questions about your pet’s recovery process, our veterinary team is always available to help.

Spay and neuter operations are one of the most common procedures offered by our Point Loma veterinarians. Not only do these procedures help control the unwanted animal population, but they also reduce your pet’s risk for certain cancers. If possible, we strongly recommend spaying or neutering your pet prior to six months of age.

Our advanced surgical procedures include orthopedic surgery, cruciate ligament repair, and emergency gastric dilation volvulus (GDV) surgery. Whether your pet’s surgery is scheduled in advance or is an urgent, emergency procedure, you can feel confident that your pet will receive the highest quality care. Thanks to our veterinarians’ substantial experience and advanced surgical training, we work hard to minimize potential risks while protecting your pet’s overall health.
