Point Loma Animal Vet Clinic Provides Routine Pet Dental Cleanings

Dog-with-toothbrushThanks to preventive care and vaccinations, our pets are living longer, healthier lives than ever before. That’s why you may be surprised to learn that one of the leading causes of health problems in dogs is dental disease. In fact, according to the American Veterinarian Dental Society, by the age of three, more than 80% of dogs will already show symptoms of gum disease. Here at Bayside Veterinary Hospital in Point Loma, our veterinarians are committed to ensuring your pet receives the best dental care possible.

Cleaning Dogs’ Teeth is Essential to Your Pet’s Long-term Health

While dogs rarely develop cavities, they are prone to gum disease and excess tartar build-up. Over time, plaque naturally builds up on your dog’s teeth, just like plaque builds up on ours. Can you imagine how unpleasant our teeth and breath would be if we never brushed? As a pet owner, one of the best things you can do is regularly cleaning your dog’s teeth, which will help prevent plaque and tartar build-up. While your dog may be uncomfortable at first, once you establish a routine of regular brushing, your dog will become accustomed to this care. Our veterinarians, Dr. Rozsa and Dr. Deo are happy to show you how to best brush your dog’s teeth. We can also recommend special doggie dental brushes and toothpaste made for dogs.

For optimal dental care, we recommend your dog visit our Point Loma animal vet clinic for an annual dental cleaning. During each cleaning, we examine your pet’s mouth for signs of swelling, inflammation and infection. We also evaluate the size and shape of the salivary glands and lymph nodes in your pet’s neck. Our veterinary staff is trained to provide compassionate care while cleaning dogs’ teeth. We will administer a mild anesthesia to help your dog relax and ensure optimal cleaning. If anesthesia is used, our animal clinic will administer several diagnostic tests, including blood work, to ensure the anesthesia is carefully tailored to your pet’s needs.

Our Point Loma veterinary technicians use the latest technology available to veterinary hospitals, including hand and ultrasonic cleaning, polishing and fluoride treatments, to remove plaque and tartar from your pet’s teeth. Removing tartar is especially important because it helps prevent the development of gingivitis, a condition that causes “pockets” of space to form between your pet’s teeth and the gum line. Once these pockets are formed, it is easy for bacteria to enter and cause an infection.

Even with regular exams and cleaning, it is possible an object such as a toy or food may become trapped in your pet’s teeth, leading to a dental emergency. We recommend you visit our animal vet hospital for urgent care if your pet is drooling excessively, unwilling to chew food or toys or has an especially potent case of bad breath. A full examination will ensure that we can treat a mild infection or gum line inflammation before this condition develops into a more serious infection. Untreated, bacteria from a mild dental infection can enter your pet’s bloodstream, leading to kidney, liver and heart valve problems.

At Bayside Veterinary Hospital in Point Loma, we are proud to be one of the leading veterinary hospitals in the San Diego community. Our open door policy means we welcome all pets for any care, even if you have never visited our animal vet clinic before. We invite you to call us at (619) 610-0123 to schedule a routine dental cleaning today!
